Photography Workshops

Here's What It's Really Like to Learn With Me

I Just Released a New Film for My Photography Workshops - Here's What It's Really Like to Learn With Me

I've just put a new hero film live on my workshops page - a short piece made up of glimpses from real workshops in Hinckley, giving you a proper feel for what a session with me is actually like. It's scored with an original piece of music, composed specifically for the film using AI, so nothing about it is off-the-shelf. Not the teaching, not the sound.

If you've been thinking about booking a photography workshop but aren't sure what one actually involves, or whether you really need one to get better, this post - and the film - should answer that.

Why I Made This Film

Most photography workshop pages read the same: a list of what you'll learn, a price, a "book now" button. None of that actually shows you what a session with me feels like. So instead of writing more copy, I filmed one.

Rather than a full walkthrough, it's a handful of small moments pulled from real sessions - a glimpse of reading light, a decision being made in the field, that moment where something clicks for a student. Short as it is, it says more about what a workshop actually feels like than a page of copy ever could.

Kevin attended 2 workshops, he loved the first one so much that he came back for a full 2nd day.

An Original Score, Not a Stock Track

I don't use stock music in my films - I never have, on weddings or anything else I produce. For this one, I worked with AI music generation to compose a track built specifically around the pace and mood of the film, rather than dropping in something that's already soundtracked twenty other photography videos on YouTube. It's a small detail, but it's the same principle I teach in workshops: don't settle for the default when you can make something that's actually yours.

Darren and Nat joined me for a full day for a 2:1 workshop covering landscapes, nature and wildlife.

Do You Actually Need a Workshop to Learn Photography?

This is the question I get asked most, usually by people who've watched a lot of YouTube tutorials and still feel stuck on Auto. The honest answer is that you don't need a workshop - you can teach yourself photography from books, videos and trial and error. Plenty of people do. But most people learning alone hit the same wall: they can follow a tutorial on shutter speed or aperture, but they can't tell, in the moment, in real light, in front of a real subject, why their photo still isn't working.

That's the gap a workshop closes. A tutorial can explain manual mode. It can't watch you set your exposure in front of a real scene and tell you, immediately, what to change and why - which is the difference between knowing the theory and actually being able to use it. That immediate, applied feedback is what most people are really missing, and it's what tends to make the difference stick.

An example of low light trails using long exposure, often conducted during an Astro Landscape Workshop.

What to Expect From a Session With Me

If you've never been on a photography workshop before, here's roughly how it goes. We start with your camera as it is - not a generic setup, but yours, with your settings, your gaps, your questions. From there we move to shooting in real locations and real light, working through composition, exposure and creative decision-making as we go, rather than sitting through theory for its own sake. Every session finishes with time in Lightroom, editing the images we've just taken, so you leave with a finished piece of work and a workflow you can repeat on your own.

Sessions run privately, 1:1 or 2:1, and are built around wherever you're starting from - whether that's picking up a camera for the first time or coming back to photography after years away and wanting to finally get past where you left off.

One of my earlier shoots, working with HRH Earl of Wessex - Prince Edward visiting an art college.

Who These Workshops Are For.

The people who get the most out of a session with me tend to fall into a few groups: beginners ready to move past Auto and start making deliberate creative choices, hobbyists who want the confidence to shoot with intention instead of guesswork, couples or friends who want to learn together, creatives returning to photography who are ready to rediscover their eye, and business owners who want to create their own strong visual content on their own terms.

Wherever you're starting from, the aim is the same: to get you shooting with real creative control, not just a slightly better grip on the settings menu.

With 14 years experience in freelance photography, I also do weddings and here’s my latest international wedding in Greece with Ollie and Kirsten.

Watch the Film, Then Come and Learn It With Me

The new film is live at the top of my Photography Workshops page, alongside the full range of sessions - from a one-hour Shadow Experience to the six-week Foundation Programme. If it's the first time you're seeing how a session actually runs, that's exactly what it's there for.

If you've watched it and you're ready to stop guessing your way through Auto, get in touch and let's find the right session for where you're starting from.

Even McDonalds have got me on their radar for PR commissions. I work with some global brands and my experience is so vast, you can’t fail to learn anything photography related from me.

Kids Photography Curriculum — A Creative Skill Your Child Will Keep For Life

I've been teaching photography for 14 years. Here's what I've turned it into.

It's been a while since I've been in your inbox — so I'll keep this honest and to the point.

Over the past couple of years I've been quietly building something I'm genuinely proud of. You might know me from a jigsaw puzzle or calendar, or perhaps you came to one of my photography workshops. Either way — thank you. Your early support made it possible for me to keep going.

What I've been building is called PHARTED. Photo • Art • Education.

It's a photography education brand built around one belief: people don't fail at photography because they lack talent. They fail because nobody gave them a proper structure to learn from.

I've spent 14 years teaching photography to hundreds of students — all ages, all abilities, complete beginners to serious hobbyists. The same problems come up every time. Confusion. Overwhelm. Inconsistent results. So I've started turning everything I teach into structured digital products that actually work.

The first one is live now.

Now’s your chance to learn how to shoot street photography in the comfort of a group setting.

Join me and a group of like minded photographers on a unique street photography group workshop on Saturday April 23rd from 12pm - 8pm ish.

Candid Street Photography

Street Photography is notoriously one of and if not the single most difficult genre of photography to do. I mean you’ve got to be out in public, pointing your camera at strangers without them noticing you, so you can get a candid and natural story of life in the street. You’ve got to learn to do this covertly but not in a seedy way and so that you can get the story and not interfere with the image nor the peoples lives of whom you’re shooting.

I will show you how to do this and it’ll be great fun!

Montemartre, Paris, 2014

Sounds easy right?

I know it isn’t and believe me, I still find it challenging but I have created a large collection of street photographs over the past 12 years of shooting professionally and on this course, I plan to give you as much information to set you on the path to creating some impressive works of art, not just on this session but in the future for when you’re out on your own.

Hemsby, Norfolk

Take this image above as an example, neither of the men are even aware of this photograph to this day! I kept them busy in conversation, while I shot them from the hip.

Nottingham, 2018

The image above was shot by discovering an amazing backdrop and waiting for somebody to pop up in to place and I couldn’t believe my luck when their shadow created this shape, as if they’d head butted the fence to bend the steal!

There’s always an element of luck involved but I’ll show you how to make your own luck!

Birmingham, 2017

You’ve also got to get in to that creative zone in order to see the potential of a scene before it unfolds. I’ll show you how to do that as well and give you ideas that will make you go oooooh! and occasionally aaaaah!

Birmingham 2017

It’s all about shifting your perspective!

So fancy joining me and a group of like minded photographers?
I have just one of these workshops available and there’s only 3 out of the 4 places left.
Spaces are £125pp and absolute value for money, including a technical session in my studio on how to use your camera and set it up for street photography.
We’ll then go and do a live shoot on location in Leicester City Centre before returning back to my studio to do some post production using Adobe Lightroom.

Milton Keynes, 2015

You will get the low down on street photography from start to finish, where you’ll also create at least one work of art, I almost guarantee it!

April and May Group Photography Workshops

Current Available Group Photography Classes and Workshops in April and May 2023.

This year my group photography workshops have for some reason exploded! Every course I run is getting maxed out and it’s amazing to know I’m creating a world where people can immerse themselves in the one thing I absolutely love doing, photography.

I guess it may be because my work is becoming more popular and more people know about my workshops and photography courses now. Also I bet the word is getting around about how good they are. I’m not boasting as such and certainly not suggesting my workshops are amazing but my students do say things like that. Look, here’s my latest review:

This was without question an amazing course, well presented, we were made to feel welcome, I just wanted to know how to set my camera up, but I got a whole lot more from it, Paul explained everything in a manner you understand, nothing is to much trouble for him, he makes time for everyone, and if you don’t get it (as I didn’t) he just explains it again, I highly recommend him if you want to get more from your camera, I definitely booking another course.
Thank you Paul

I’ve got 2 dates available for the 121 workshops as they’re more personal, I have limited availability, where you’ll need to get in touch with me directly to discuss these options, which come in half day and full day packages.

Here’s a selection of my work from an archive of well over ten thousand photographs.

I contacted Paul regarding a photography workshop for my husbands 50th birthday and I can honestly say it’s the best present he’s ever had! With a keen interest in street photography, my husband already had a passion to take pictures but he lacked the technical knowledge and ‘tricks of the trade’, which Paul has in abundance. I booked a one to one, half-day workshop and Paul tailored the session to suit. He taught my husband so much and the difference it has made is unbelievable, his photography has come on leaps and bounds. If you want to enhance your skills or broaden your creativity then I would highly recommend Paul as an inspirational tutor.
